QuickBooks is an accounting software package developed and marketed by Intuit which is a California, USA based business and financial Software Company. QuickBooks products are generally developed for small and medium-sized businesses and offer on-premises accounting applications as well as cloud-based versions which accept business payments, manage and pay bills, and payroll functions.

Intuit launched the first desktop version of QuickBooks in 1992. After launching QuickBooks, the Intuit Inc. has only grown up day by day. Now the company has over 1.5 million users and is a giant presence in the personal finance and accounting world.

There were some limitations in QuickBooks early edition such as it did not function as a “double-entry” accounting package. Professional accountants were not satisfied with the early version of QuickBooks, complaining about the poor security controls such as there was no audit trail as well as it was not conformity with traditional accounting standards. Initially the QuickBooks shared a different codebase for the Windows and Mac versions and this codebase was based on In-House Accountant, which Intuit had acquired.

Intuit reduced the gap with these accounting professionals, eventually providing full audit trail capabilities, double-entry accounting functions and increased functions in their updated version of QuickBooks. Intuit had developed Basic and Pro versions of the software and started offering industry-specific versions, with workflow processes and reports designed for each of these business types along with terminology associated with the trades. Now QuickBooks includes versions for manufacturers, wholesalers, contractors, professional service firms, non-profit entities, and retailers, in addition to one specifically designed for professional accounting firms who service multiple small business clients.
